How to prepare a car for hauling
- Wash the car and inspect it for cosmetic damage. Look for imperfections such as chips, dents, discolorations, or scratches and prepare a written record. A camera comes in handy when you need photographic evidence. Make sure that you date all the records.
- Remove all personal items and valuables from inside the vehicle. Detachable CD and DVD players, GPS, stereo systems, and other aftermarket accessories risk potential damage during the transit process. You may consider taking them out before handing over the car.
- Remove the toll tags to prevent them from running unnecessary charges while in transit.
- Leave about 1/4 of gas in the tank. The trucker needs it to start and drive the vehicle during the loading and unloading process. Too much fuel might increase your vehicle's weight, creating potential problems with the shifting authorities.
- Try to keep your vehicle in running shape so that you can cut down on the cost to ship. Check the fluid levels and top them off, keep the tires well inflated, and make sure that you have a fully charged battery. Prepare a list of the existing mechanical problems and special operations needed top run your vehicle and stick it on the dashboard.
- Cover the loose parts on the exterior. Remove the spoilers, roof racks, ground effects and other detachable accessories fitted on the vehicle. Retract the antenna and fold-in the side-view mirrors.
- Deactivate or disable the alarm system to keep it from pestering the driver during the transit process. Get a set of spare keys for the truck driver before giving out the vehicle.
- Ask the carrier to run you through the paperwork needed when shifting. Stay up to date with your driver's license and vehicle registration. Find out about the relevant taxes if you're selling or buying a car in a different state.
