Who Sells the Most ATVs in the World?

ATVs, also known as All-Terrain Vehicles, have witnessed a remarkable surge in popularity over the past few years. A growing number of individuals are now drawn to these exhilarating machines, eagerly embracing the outdoors.

In the industry, you'll find a fierce competition between established brands with lengthy histories and promising up-and-coming manufacturers. The market constantly evolves to keep pace with this fierce rivalry.

This article explores the leading sellers of ATVs worldwide. It delves into their market share, highlighting key features and what distinguishes them from competitors.

What Is an ATV?

ATVs are a popular choice for those who want a four-wheeled vehicle's precision steering and power when exploring off-road without worrying about limited surfaces.

These vehicles are powerful and designed for rugged terrain, with low-pressure tires that can navigate wet, muddy, and rocky landscapes. Sand or snow is also relatively easy for them.

Since their handlebars make them more responsive than a UTV's steering wheel, they often have an advantage in maneuvering tight spots on trails or around obstacles in the wilderness.

The power available from ATVs today can be remarkable—offering plenty of torque and even diff lock options to help you easily traverse difficult ground. Most models come with integrated electric start systems allowing the rider to easily restart if stalled.

Many also feature safety systems such as automatic shutoff switches that help prevent rollovers or automatically switch off the engine if no riders are detected.

ATV History

No one can be blamed if they're unfamiliar with ATVs. These vehicles are relatively recent in the history of motorized transportation. Most accounts point to Honda as the manufacturer of the first ATV prototype in 1967, when they developed a three-wheeled ATV precursor.

However, other sources argue that even before then, in either 1960 or 1961, John Gower from Canada created an amphibious all-terrain vehicle (AATV) called the Jiger, which had six wheels and could drive over both land and water.

At least part of why ATVs were developed came from motorcycle manufacturers wanting to sell more vehicles, particularly in locations where people couldn't ride motorcycles year-round.

This tendency gave rise to an alternative form of transportation that could take advantage of some of a motorcycle's versatility with added utility for various terrains and climates.

It is unclear who exactly should be credited with inventing this incredible machine. But there is no doubt it has provided recreation and gotten many people out into nature to explore off-roads they otherwise wouldn't have seen.

ATV Prices

Plenty of ATVs are out there to fit everyone's needs at various price points. The prices vary greatly depending on the type of bike. They also vary depending on the brand and features you're shopping for.

Prices start at around $5,000 for many brands. These models are usually popular choices for beginner riders. At this price point, you can get an ATV with basic features and moderate horsepower that are perfect for recreational riders.

If you have more to spend, there are also larger ranges of models and trim levels. They cost from $8,000-$9,000 up to around $11,000.

These higher-end models have more power and features like comfortable seats with padding, heavy-duty cargo racks, and advanced lighting systems.

For experienced riders who want additional power and features, it may be worth budgeting a couple of thousand extra dollars to get an ATV from a reputable brand.

Of course, if you prefer the convenience of budget models, it is still possible to find great bikes for around $5,000 or $6,000, which provide excellent value for money.

Which Market Sells The Most ATVs?

The North American market (United States, Canada, and Mexico) has had an incredibly successful year of ATV and UTV sales in 2020.

According to Motorcycles Data, the number of global ATV sales crested at 0.7 million units sold last year, with North American buyers purchasing most of those. China trailed in second place, while the European market share was down 31%, with almost half the amount sold than five years prior.

The all-terrain vehicle markets came roaring back in 2020 after nearly a decade since its emergence, thanks mainly to strong growth in the United States following the legalization of e-ATVs and UTVs in 2016.

This also coincided with consumer trends towards economic recreational vehicles over traditional ones, which have seen waning interest.

The result is an ATV industry on track for even greater success ahead as consumers look for more cost-effective adventure options and manufacturers respond with better models suited for everyone from first-time riders to experienced enthusiasts.
