Types and Functions of Hauling Equipment

Published by Tamar Hela.

Types and Functions of Hauling Equipment

If you are new to construction, it is important to understand the different equipment used on your project. They have many functions that might be complex to understand at first.

However, learning about the major types of hauling equipment can save time, money, and frustration in the long run.

Hauling equipment, in particular, has many different types and functions. Heavy hauling infrastructure equipment of various types is used to transport earth, aggregate, rock, ore, coal, and other loose materials.

The first thing you need to know about hauling equipment is the difference between equipment.

Hauling Excavators

Excavators are heavy construction vehicles used to excavate soil and rock. They are made up of a boom, extension arms, buckets, and a cab mounted on a rotating platform known as the "house." The house sits atop a carriageway with tracks or wheels.

Excavator operators use controls to control the vehicle's speed, direction, and depth. Operators must pay attention to many factors while operating an excavator, including:

1) Gearing – gear ratio determines how fast the machine moves

2) Track tension – track tension affects the amount of force exerted on the ground

3) Throttle position – throttle position influences how much power goes into the motor

4) Engine RPM – engine RPM determines the speed of the machine

5) Gear selection – gear selection determines whether the operator drives the machine forward, backward, or sideways

6) Brakes – brakes slow down the excavator

Hauling Equipment

The most common types of hauling equipment are cranes, crawler loaders, articulated haulers, tractors, and dump trucks.

Cranes

A crane is a lifting device used in construction sites to raise heavy objects such as beams, pipes, and machinery. Cranes come in many shapes and sizes, ranging from small portable models to large, stationary machines capable of handling massive loads.

There are several different kinds of cranes. Some use mechanical power while others use electricity. Some cranes are operated manually, while others are automated.

  • Mobile cranes: They perform the same function as stationary cranes, but mobile cranes are mounted on flat cars, trucks, or other mobile platforms with trusses.
  • A tower crane: You might have seen one of these mounted on top of a steel tower – this is an example of a fixed overhead crane.

Crane operators must wear safety equipment to ensure their own safety. This is the same for operating any heavy construction equipment.

Crawler loaders

Crawler loaders are similar to bulldozers, except they have four or more wheels instead of two. Crawler loaders are often used for grading roads and building foundations. They are also used for moving dirt and gravel around a job site.

Crawler loaders can be powered by diesel engines or electric motors, making them popular in the construction industry. Crawler loaders are similar to tracked loaders except that they have two sets of wheels, one set on each side of the vehicle.

Crawlers can travel faster than tracked loaders because they don't need steering. They are, however, more difficult to maneuver than tracked loaders.

Articulated haulers

Each type of hauler has benefits and drawbacks. For example, a tracked loader is great for work sites with the soft ground because it doesn't sink into the soil. However, it isn't suitable for hard surfaces because it won't climb high hills.

Alternatively, wheeled loaders are better for hard surfaces because they can go up steep inclines.

An articulated hauler combines the best features of both tracked and wheeled loaders. It is designed to handle all types of terrain, which makes it popular in the construction industry working in places with unpredictable weather. In addition, it has a front-mounted boom which allows it to lift and move heavy loads through rough terrain.

Tractors

The tractor is one of the most important pieces of equipment in farming and construction projects. A tractor is a vehicle that pulls loads of material such as earth, sand, gravel, stone, clay, fertilizer, seed, water, and chemicals to a location where it can be spread out a large area. Diesel engines usually power them.

Different types of tractors are used depending on what kind of work you want to be done. For example, there are track-type tractors, which use tracks similar to those found on earthmovers, and wheeled tractors.

Wheeled tractors are easier to maneuver around tight areas and do not require special tracks. Most of the time, tractors are used in agriculture, especially in fields that are too big for people to manage manually.

This means they can usually handle muddy terrain, which is a significant advantage of tractors. In addition, tractors are used during road building projects, mining operations, and construction projects.

Dump trucks

Also known as dump tractors, dump trucks are used to move enormous quantities of building supplies from one place to another. This may be done by filling the bucket with dirt or gravel and then dumping it onto a conveyor belt or directly onto a pile.

A wide range of materials is transported by dump trucks. For example, they can haul sand, cement, asphalt, crushed stone, gravel, clay, and even concrete.

These trucks are typically equipped with a four-wheel drive and a hydraulic system for steering.

The two types of dump trucks most frequently used by crews are side and rear. With one side raised, side dump trucks tip their platform to the side of the vehicle and let gravity do the rest of the work.

Rear dump trucks function similarly to tipper trucks. Trucks are utilized to transport materials on roadways because hauling costs are lower than other pieces of building machinery.

Because the tipper is a truck, it offers exceptional agility, versatility, and durability. It can assist a construction crew in drastically lower operating costs.

Loaders

A loader is a piece of heavy equipment used in construction jobs to move materials around. A typical loader weighs over 40 tons and can carry up to 4,500 pounds. This makes it perfect for moving heavier loads.

While most people think about loaders when it comes to moving material like dirt or gravel, there are many different types of loaders. For example, some loaders are used to lift concrete while others are used to unload trucks.

There Are Four Main Types of Loaders:

Each loader has unique benefits and drawbacks. For instance, wheel loaders are more maneuverable than crawler loaders because of their low center of gravity. Crawlers, Alternatively, turn less well but are more stable.

Wheel loaders

Wheel loaders are very versatile pieces of construction equipment. They can be used to dig holes, dump sand, spread asphalt, and even transport heavy equipment.

Wheel loaders are also easy to operate because they only require two pedals to drive. There are four different types of wheel loaders.

  • Light loaders: Light loaders weigh less than 20 tonnes and are mainly used for loading and transporting smaller items.
  • Heavy wheel loaders: Heavy wheel loaders weigh between 20 and 50 tonnes and are used for loading and transporting larger items. They have very powerful engines and are designed for heavy-duty tasks such as mining and quarrying. They can also clear snow in places that experience heavy snowfall.
  • Compact wheel loaders: Compact wheel loaders are compact versions of wheel loaders that weigh less than 10 tonnes. They are generally used for small jobs, such as digging trenches and ditches.
  • Medium wheel loaders: Medium wheel loaders are medium-sized, weighing between 10 and 20 tonnes. They are used for general purpose work, such as road maintenance and excavation.

Skid-steer loaders

Skid-steer loaders are one of the most versatile machines available for the construction industry. They are small and nimbler than traditional excavators and cranes, making them ideal for working in tight places or around obstacles.

Their small size allows them to fit into narrow spaces, while their ability to move within their own footprint makes it easy to maneuver around completed areas. Since they use wheels rather than tracks, skid-steer loaders don't damage surfaces during use.

The best part about skid-steer loader is that you can attach a wide range of tools to make them do almost anything. Some models include buckets, grapples, augers, drills, saws, and even snow blowers. This versatility is great for job sites that require multiple types of equipment.

For example, you might need a bucket loader for clearing debris, a grapple for moving large objects such as concrete forms, and a drill for boring holes. Or you could combine several tools to complete a single task.

A common combination includes a bucket loader with a grapple attached to dig trenches, followed by a hydraulic breaker to break up the dirt. For larger-scale projects, a hydraulic excavator is frequently employed in place of a crawler loader.

Bulldozers

An excavator with a blade mounted on the front is referred to as a bulldozer. A diesel engine or electric motor usually powers it. Bulldozers are often used for clearing land, leveling terrain, moving dirt, grading roads, building foundations, and moving earth during mining operations.

Tracked and wheeled bulldozers are the two primary varieties. Tracked bulldozers have four wheels on each side of the frame. Wheeled bulldozers have three wheels on each side of their frames.

Both types of bulldozers are very powerful and capable of doing a lot of work. However, a wheeled model may be better suited for your project if you need something more compact and mobile.

There are many different attachments available for bulldozers. The bucket is one of the most common. Extensions like this allow you to move soil, rocks, gravel, sand, and other materials.

Another type of attachment is called a grader. This attachment is used for leveling surfaces and smoothing out rough areas.

Backhoe loaders

One of the most adaptable pieces of heavy machinery is the backhoe loader. These machines are typically found in construction sites, farms, mines, quarries, landscaping projects, and many other places where excavation needs to be done.

A backhoe loader has a large boom extending from the machine's body. As a result, it can perform some really incredible feats and reach into small spaces.

The bucket attached to the end of the boom can be adjusted up and down to change its size. For instance, you could use it to create a trench or hole in the earth.

In addition to being able to adjust the bucket, there is a toolbox located near the rear of the vehicle. You can attach tools such as pickaxes, auger bits, shovels, and buckets to the toolbox.

Another feature of backhoe loaders worth mentioning is that a wide range of engines usually power them. There are diesel engines, gasoline engines, electric motors, and others. Some models have hydraulic power while others have mechanical power.

Regardless of how the power is delivered, a backhoe loader is a reliable piece of machinery that is also incredibly versatile.

Conclusion

As you can see, there is much to learn when it comes to the functions of hauling equipment. The exciting thing is even with lots of similarities, each piece of hauling equipment on this list has its own specific purpose. Some work crews may have preferences in terms of what they use, while some are chosen over others depending on project type.

There are crucial aspects to consider at a job site, including everything from soil type, weather predictions, and tough terrain. Learning about the equipment's functionalities is the first step for anyone involved in the construction industry.
