Register An Imported Vehicle In Turkey - Process & Procedure
Registering an imported vehicle in a foreign country may seem a little more daunting in theory than it is in practice. The main distinction you’ll need to concern yourself with is whether you’re importing on a temporary or permanent basis. While some of the forms, documents, and requirements are the same, there are some key differences.
Temporary Vehicle Import & Residency Permit
For vehicles that are brought into Turkey on a temporary basis, they can be operated for a period of up to two years without local registration. It should be noted that this timeframe was recently extended from six months to two years; however a local residency permit is needed to extend the permit. Temporarily imported vehicles are allowed to drive on their foreign license plates during this period.
Required Documents (Temporary Import)
These are the primary registration documents you’ll need for temporary import:
- Proof of ownership
- Valid local insurance
- Passport
- Work permit or school certificate (if applicable)
- Temporary entrance carnet (see link at bottom of page for more info)

Permanent Vehicle Registration & Turkish Auto Resources
For permanently imported vehicles in Turkey, the process of registration is a little more thorough. The section below outlines the requirements and documents you’ll need.
Registration of Permanent Imported Vehicle
Though Turkish nationals may be entitled to import one vehicle at no cost (check on the current status if this is your plan), the process can be more difficult for foreigners.
Foreigners must get local residency in order to apply for a permanent import, which means you first must put a large down payment on hold with a bank while you go through the process. Though not always the case, the bank deposit can exceed the value of the vehicle so be prepared for the potential cost! You will also need to present the following documents for vehicle registration:
- Passport & visa
- Residency & work permits (with copies)
- Proof of deposit from bank
- Title & registration (original & copies)
- Driver’s license
- Proof of insurance
- Entry carnet
