Tips To Keep In Mind When Storing An RV

Published by Joe Webster.

Tips To Keep In Mind When Storing An RV

Part of RV ownership is making sure it’s kept in good condition and ready to go when you embark on your next trip. As an RV owner, you’re probably pretty well-versed in the basic maintenance requirements, but there are also things you need to keep in mind when storing your RV when it’s not in use. If you live in an area that experiences harsh winters and storms, you’ll need to be especially careful when storing it through the colder months.

Storage Space

The first step in preparing for RV storage is securing an appropriate space to park it when not in use. You may have a dedicated space of your own that you use, or you may pay for storage from a facility that offers long-term storage. In either case, it’s advisable to store your RV somewhere that it is covered, if not inside a garage. This will protect it from the elements, as well as keep it out of the sun, which can cause damage to tires and the exterior of the vehicle. You will also want the RV to be reasonably accessible for when you’re ready to get back in action, so somewhere close to your home is preferable.

Cleaning & Inspection

Cleaning both inside and out is recommended, not just so that your RV is in good condition next time you use it, but also as a safeguard against pests and rodents. Any food should be removed from inside the RV and internal doors and vents should be kept open to allow for airflow, which will stop mold from growing. During this step, you should also check for any cracks, leaks, or gaps that would allow for infestation. Any gaps can serve as an entry point for mice, which have a tendency to chew through wires and cause damage that can be costly.

Exterior Cleanup & Prep

Any sliders on the RV should be retracted during storage to prevent damage from sun or extreme weather. If being stored outside, an RV cover is recommended, as well as tire covers. Long exposure to sun can harm the outside of the RV, as well as cause tire damage that could be costly. On that note, tire pressure should be check prior to storing your RV since they tend to lose pressure when stored long-term.

Mechanical Safeguards

To guard against any mechanical issues, there are some steps you should take regard the internal components of your RV as well. Make sure all power sources are turned off, and if being stored for long periods of time, the batteries should be disconnected and stored in a cool, dry place. Batteries, like tires, are affected by extended inactivity and you may have trouble starting the RV if proper steps aren’t taken. All water should be drained from the plumbing system to prevent corrosion or freezing during storage, as well. Using a fuel stabilizer is recommended so that deposits don’t form and cause issues the next time you drive. And finally, you should check in on your RV periodically even when it’s in storage to make sure there are no issues that can be addressed in the short term while it’s not in use.

There are a lot of options for auto transport these days, which surprisingly makes it harder to find a good company. I received more than 10 offers to ship my car, but I couldn’t decide on any of them... Fortunately, I made the right choice with A1 Auto Transport.
