The Ford Mustang is a classic American sports car that is iconic in how it's often associated with Americana at its finest. But while it has been a massive success in the United States since Ford released the original Ford Mustang on April 17, 1964, it has never been released on a global scale. In 2014, however, Ford announced plans to bring the Ford Mustang to many parts of the world for the first time, including much of Europe, and analysts and car enthusiasts were eager to see if the Mustang could replicate its sales successes outside of the United States.
Based on recently released figures, the results show that it has been able to do so with flying colors.
Now the Best-Selling Sports Car Worldwide.
Ford has recently announced that the Ford Mustang has now become the top selling two-door sports car worldwide in 2015. Based off of vehicle registration data that was collected by IHS Automotive, 111,000 regular Ford Mustang coupes were sold and an additional 30,000 Ford Mustang convertibles were also sold.
To make the achievement even more special, it has also been reported that the Ford Mustang now has the distinction of being the only sports coupe to have had more than 100,000 vehicles become newly-registered.
The Sales Figures Are Technically Even Higher.
The above sales figures already makes the Ford Mustang the top selling two-door sports car worldwide, but it doesn't even take into account unfilled orders. Instead, the aforementioned sales figures based strictly on new registrations. In the UK and Australia, in particular, there is a high level of demand for the Ford Mustang but there's only limited availability.
To put this into perspective, consider that Ford sold 13,000 Mustangs in Europe in 2015, but out of that number, only 4,700 were able to be manufactured and delivered so far. Ford has been caught off guard with the unexpected demand, which is a good problem to have.
Topping Individual Sales Charts.
Even in individual countries, the Ford Mustang is topping sales charts. In the 4th quarter of 2015, it was the top-selling sports coupe in China. In March of 2016, it even topped the list in Germany for the first time, as well as in France. Topping the list in Germany over German-produced alternatives is quite the achievement. Of course, in the United States, the Ford Mustang is also the top selling sports coupe. It has actually sold more than the Dodge Challenger and the Chevrolet Camaro put together in 2015.
Now that Ford is aware of the high demand that exists globally for the Ford Mustang, look for sales figures in 2016 to be even higher than in 2015, as Ford will be able to keep up with demand in key markets such as the United Kingdom and Australia. The turnaround that Ford has had as a company, along with the other Big Two U.S. auto manufacturers, is remarkable when one considers the dire straights that they were in just a few years ago.
