We often write about cars on this site—it is after all one of the primary items we deal in as an auto transport company. But usually, when we cover something about cars or trucks, it’s with an eye toward the consumer to help them learn more about the best vehicles on the market, emerging trends in the industry, or other tips that can help with your day-to-day driving needs. In this post, we’re going to cover something that’s more for fun than anything: the world’s most unique cars.
1981 Delorean DMC-12
No list of iconic or unique cars would be complete without the Delorean DMC-12. Made famous as the time travelling car used in the Back to the Future movies, the Delorean can’t take you back in time, but its look and design seem to capture something that’s at the same time futuristic and retro. That’s probably one of the reasons that it was a perfect choice for the movie franchise. It’s not particularly impressive in terms of performance, but it is one of the most unique cars in the history of automaking.
1942 L’oeuf Electric
Eat your heart out, Elon Musk. Some 60 years before the Tesla Motor Company was even founded, there was a concept car produced in Paris, France that was all electric. While it wasn’t the first electric car ever made—that happened way back in the 1800s—it was the first one shaped like an egg (l’oeuf is French for “the egg.”) With a top speed of nearly 50 mph and a driving range of 60 miles, it was a marvel of its time and its designer actually drove the car until he passed away in 1990.

1936 Stout Scarab
One of the first incarnations of what would eventually become the modern-day minivan, the Stout Scarab was made in Detroit slightly before its heyday of auto production. A decade after the 1936 model, the Scarab become the first car to feature a fiberglass body and air suspension, which gives it a special place it auto history along with its recognition as the first minivan. The Scarab had rear-wheel drive and had the engine in the back (sound familiar Volkswagen?), as well as an oval-type shape that provided more room in the interior of the vehicle that allowed for a folding table and moveable seats.
1973 Reliant Robin
The first and only three-wheeled car on this list, the Reliant Robin was manufactured in England and was quite popular for a short period of time, as was Reliant as an automaker. It featured a fiberglass body and was well-liked enough to remain in production in one version or another for 30 years. The Robin stood out as an affordable vehicle, which helped its popularity, but did have some safety issues, as many three-wheel cars did.
1961 Amphicar 770
This is one you may not have heard of before, largely because it’s such a farfetched idea that it seems like something no automaker would ever consider outside of military vehicles. As ridiculous as it may sound, this car was made with propellers to help guide it through water. While it could be driven on land or in water, it didn’t perform particularly well at either one, which partially explains why its relatively short production period.
