The “need for speed” has become something of a cliché in most circles, but it still holds plenty of importance to people in circles that include racing and car enthusiasts. While there is often some dispute as to which cars are truly the fastest, the cars on this list are widely considered to be among the fastest you’ll find. With that said, we will not include multiple cars of the same make to detail a wider range of vehicles that approach the highest speeds without being redundant in our assessment.
Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+
One of the gold standards for speed, the Bugatti Chiron is no doubt one of the fastest cars out there, with the Super Sport 300+ being the top of the class. As the name implies the Super Sport 300+ is one of the first supercars capable of exceeding 300 mph. Though some other cars may lay claim to breaking the 300-mph barrier, the Super Sport 300+ has a proven and timed track pedigree to back it up, which few, if any, of the other cars on this list can boast.
Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut
With remarkable power and aerodynamics, the Swedish Koenigsegg Jesko can also lay claim to being one of the fastest cars. The Absolut model, like the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, is a souped of version of the previous iteration that is rumored to exceed speeds of 300 mph as well, though that has yet to be proven in a timed format. It has a calculated and theoretical speed of up to 330 mph, but as we’ve seen before, that doesn’t always hold up perfectly when it comes to actual performance, which we’ll have to wait to see with our own eyes since it’s a relatively new model.

Hennesey Venom F5
Like the Jesko Absolut, the Hennessey Venom F5 has yet to demonstrate its full speed capabilities in practice, but offers some tantalizing potential which it hopes to approach 310 mph. To date, the Venom F5 has demonstrated that it can hit 270 mph, which is nothing to sneeze at, but the limited production and plans for further tweaks from the manufacturer seem to point to that being a realizable goal. Given its ability to reach upper end speeds in record time, it will be no surprise if the Venom F5 surpasses 300 mph in the near future.
SSC Tuatara
Once regarded as the fastest car for a few years in the early 2000’s with the SSC Ultimate Aero, SSC has returned to the fold with an offering that aims to regain that crown with the Tuatara. Though there were claims that the Tuatara had eclipsed the existing record in 2020, that could not be verified, and the manufacturer stepped back from that claim after the record was called into question. Nonetheless, it still deserves a place on this list with average speeds that have surpassed those of Koenigsegg.
Rimac Nevera
The only electric car on this list, the Croatian made Rimac Nevera has already laid claim to the highest speed achieved by an EV, hitting 258 mph in 2022. With a performance that can rival many of the top gasoline powered cars, the Nevera aims to dispel the notion that EVs cannot maintain upper end speeds as well as petrol engines. With take off speeds that are already on par with or better than the other cars mentioned here, the challenge for Rimac will be in unlocking its ability to operate at the highest ends of the speed spectrum.
