The U.S. has no shortage of great boating destinations, which understandably makes it a difficult task to narrow it down to the best ones. That, however, is what we’re trying to do in this post, with apologies to those who may have other preferred spots that didn’t make this list. Without further ado, here are our picks for the five best boating destinations in the United States, as well as some of the reasons why we picked each one.
San Juan Islands, Washington
If you enjoy island hopping with a healthy dose of seafaring wildlife, you can’t do much better than the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest. And you’ll see much more than whales, dolphins, sea lions, and seals, too. If you look skyward, you’re likely to see some bald eagles as it’s one of the areas where they’re more populous than almost any other part of the country. The islands themselves have their own wildlife and you’ll no doubt see some black-tailed deer roaming around on them.
Newport, Rhode Island
No list of the best boating destinations would be complete without mentioning Newport, Rhode Island. New England has long been a hot spot for boating and nowhere captures all that it entails quite like Newport. With coves galore and plenty of festivals centered around boating, there’s a reason the area is considered a boater’s paradise. From the beautiful architecture in the area to the countless historic sites, there’s no shortage of sightseeing to do, just as there is no shortage of great seafood eateries among the quaint shoreside villages.

The Keys, Florida
The Florida Keys are as synonymous with boating as it gets, and for good reason. Filled with plenty of islands and reefs among its 100-mile stretch, the area is perfect for boating and just about any other activity that takes place in the water. With the great Florida weather, there’s plenty of sunshine to go around and it makes for an ideal time out on the water.
Chesapeake Bay
Another staple of U.S. boating culture is Chesapeake Bay, which is also the largest estuary in the country. Stretching nearly 200 miles and touching parts of six different states, Chesapeake Bay offers unending possibilities for boaters. Annapolis, Maryland, which is home to the U.S. Naval Academy, sits on the shore of the bay and offers plenty of sightseeing and boating history if you want to do some exploring after a day out on the water.
Maui, Hawaii
As far as soaking in the natural beauty of your surroundings while boating, you can’t do much better than Maui, Hawaii. It’s been a destination for boaters longer than any other spot mentioned on this list, and for good reason. With near perfect sailing conditions all year long, it’s no wonder that it’s historically been a favorite of sailors from all over the world. Between the vibrant sea life and the breathtaking scenery of cliffs and coral reefs, it’s an ideal location for boating and an experience that anyone can enjoy.
