Certain specialty shipping services and heavy freight hauling, such as transporting farm equipment and other heavy machinery, often fall under the expertise of auto transport companies. This may be surprising to some since the assumption is often that car shipping companies and they services they provide are strictly for on the road vehicles, but this is not the case. In fact, auto transporters provide a wide array of services that can include shipping the various types of tractor plows.
Types of Tractor Plows
To start with, we’ll detail some of the most popular types of plows and what the key differences are between them.
- Moldboard plow – A moldboard plow is a versatile piece of equipment that tends to do well with both dry and wet conditions and is used to “turn” the soil using curved blades that resemble a sort of three-sided wedge, which is known as the moldboard. Moldboard plows are no longer as commonly used as they once were since the more common types of tractor-pulled plows tend to fall into the second category (below).
- Disc plow – Unlike a moldboard plow, a disc plow is better suited for dry conditions and, as the name implies, the turning blade is more an angled disc or plate, rather than the triangular wedge shape of a moldboard plow. Disc plows are more appropriate for tougher soil that may have roots, stumps, or rocks.
- Disc harrow – A disc harrow looks much like a disc plow, but the difference is that a harrow is lighter than a disc plow and doesn’t penetrate as deep as a disc plow. They are mainly used with softer soil that is being prepared for planting.
- Rototillers – Rotary tillers or rototillers are lighter than a disc harrow and are mainly used to rotate the upper level of the soil. Tillers are lighter than other types of plows and the job can be done more quickly since it’s faster to operate when you’re just turning the top layer of soil.

Shipping A Plow
There’s not a lot of preparation required when shipping a plow, but they can be heavy and the blades need to be treated with care, which is why a professional shipper is recommended. An experienced shipper will be able to handle the finer details, such as banding the blades, shrink-wrapping, and securing the plow to a pallet before transport.
Cost of Shipping A Plow
The cost of shipping can vary based on a number of factors. The first of them are the size and weight of the plow (the type of plow doesn’t figure much into the equation). Naturally, a larger and heavier plow will cost more to ship than a smaller and lighter one. The second major factor is the shipping distance. The further any type of equipment, machinery, or vehicles has to be transported, the more it will cost in the end. Because these considerations can vary widely from one situation to another, we encourage readers to contact us with the details of their shipment to get an estimate.
