When you are moving, various environmental and customs duties have to be cleared and regulations to adhere to. To clear the dock authorities, you must submit the listed documents irrespective of your visa. The essential documentation includes:
- Original registration certificate.
- Invoice/proper purchase receipt.
- Insurance certificate.
- Owner’s passport.
- The title deed of the vehicle.
- US- issued Driving license.
Custom Duty Exemption Eligibility
The import regulations allow for customs and excise tax exemptions under specific situations. These are:
- Have a residential permit to stay for over 1 year after you arrive here.
- I owned the imported car for over 12 months before arriving there.
- Prove ownership.
- Inspections to evaluate it as a used vehicle.
- Get a roadworthiness certificate.
However, all shipments are made using RORO or container method. If you are importing expensive or luxury auto, you must buy extra insurance and haul it by container to protect it against pilferage and collateral damage. While RORO is cheaper as the charges are for a parking bay only, there are certain limitations, including the fact that no personal items are kept in the car. To ensure the vehicle is not quarantined when it reaches there, steam clean it before it is moved.
Calculating Total Costs
The import duty imposed by the Customs and Excise department is about 40% to 110% of the total cost, insurance, and freight charges. Additionally, a 10% GST tax is charged before the clearances are given. To calculate the price, you must add the effective handling charges, licensing fees, and safety inspection fees.
