Shipping a vehicle into Bulgaria.
The country is part of the European Union and as a result the same rules apply as for other EU countries. You are going to have to get a Bulgaria Customs And Excise Department clearance pursuant to all regulations. You would also have to pay the Value Added Tax, insurance. You would have to apply for a verification of the origin, get a vehicle inspection and test the roadworthiness. You would also have to register the vehicle. Even though the import process is relatively the same in all EU countries, there are some specific regulations particular for Bulgaria.
Customs and excise levies.
The customs department requires that all vehicles are imported in to the country to be declared on a temporary import basis. Additionally, you must pay a “guarantee” for his vehicle in order for it to get past the Customs. The amount of the guarantee varies depending on the year, model, year of registration, model, BHP or kW of the engine and many more. Additionally, it is important to know that you would have to renew the temporary import, if the car stays in the country for more than a year.
Documentation.
Similarly to other EU countries, Bulgaria is requiring certain paperwork prior to allowing the import process. These documents include:
- Registration proof.
- Ownership proof.
- Valid visa.
- Bulgarian national driver’s license.
- International policy of insurance.
Duties and expenses.
The amount of the duties differs depending on the specifications of the car and the country of origin. If the car is imported from within the EU it isn’t going to be subjected to import taxes, but if it isn’t, the duties can get as high as 17% or more of the fair market value of the car itself. The typical VAT in Bulgaria is 20%. The VAT is calculated by determining the actual value of the goods and additionally adding international shipping and insurance costs as well as the import duty. Additionally, excise taxes might be added to the import cost if it is required after the inspection of the vehicle. However, diplomats are permitted to import a single vehicle free of all charges.
