As per the specific regulations of Sri Lanka Customs Department, there are some of the regulations that need to be followed. You need to have at least a six month visa for staying in Sri Lanka before you are eligible to import your vehicle. Only you and your family are allowed to use your vehicle for personal requirement. There is an age bar on the vehicle import and you are only allowed to import a new vehicle or the used vehicle cannot be over 3.5 years old. You have to take the vehicle back with you when you leave. Additionally, you are allowed to import vehicles within 5 years of your stay only and right hand drive vehicles are only eligible.
Submission of verified Documents.
There are some important documents that have to reach the Sri Lankan Customs at least 48 hours before the vehicle arrives. This ensures that the import process adheres to the requirements and there are no delays. The documents that are needed include:
- Copy of the owner’s passport.
- S- issued driving license.
- Title deed and registration certificate.
- Insurance policy.
- Sri Lankan visa details.
- Bill of Lading.
- Purchase invoice of the vehicle with details.
You might need to submit other documents and that is why it is best to discuss it with us at A1 Auto Transport service when you are exporting a car from USA or contact the Embassy of Sri Lanka. Shipment details and options.
There are two common methods of freight shipping that is used for auto shipping from USA to Sri Lanka. These include enclosed container shipping and Roll-on/Roll-Off. Of the two choices, container shipping is more expensive as it offers higher protection and exclusivity to your vehicle along with household goods, if you are shipping it. Everything is put within 20 feet or 40 feet containers and sealed. The whole container is loaded on the ship and transported to Sri Lanka.
If you are on a budget and only have to ship your vehicle, then RORO works best. Your vehicle has to be steam cleaned, all personal items and air conditioning gas has to be removed while the alarms have to be disabled before it is shipped out. You have to only pay for the parking space on ship’s deck so that comes out to be affordable.
Additionally, after the vehicle has cleared the Sri Lankan customs, you are required to get it registered within 2 weeks of import. There are additional registration fees which have to be cleared before the registration number is given.
