Regulations of Importation in Marseille
While the importation of vehicles from the United States to Marseille does not have some of the stricter regulations that many countries have, there are some specific directives that must be followed in order to help the importation go smoothly and ensure your vehicle is able to pass Customs Clearance with no problems. You will need to check with your shipping agent or with the Embassy of France in Washington, DC to find specific modifications that may need to be taken care of on your vehicle before shipping. Once all modifications (if any) are complete, you will need to provide customs agents with the registration for your vehicle, a commercial invoice or original bill of sale and you will need to pay a Value Added Tax of 19.5% of the value of your vehicle as described on your billing invoice or by the blue book value as assessed by the customs agent who performs your vehicle inspection. Taxes are collected by the French Customs and Excise Committee when you are coming through the customs clearance checkpoint. Once your vehicle has been cleared through customs you need to apply for a local French registration and have French domestic plates put on your vehicle. You will be allowed 4 months after clearance to register the vehicle.
How Can I Ship and What Will It Cost?
When it comes to shipping your vehicle internationally to Marseille you are in luck as Marseille has the largest shipping port in France and shipping by sea is very accessible for car importation. There are essentially two ways to ship by sea. The first way, and also the most widely used, is RoRoShipping( Roll On Roll Off) Your vehicle is rolled (driven) aboard the cargo ship and secured by braces and wheel blocks for the travel, then is rolled(driven) off of the ship when it reaches the Marseille Port in Marseille, France. You will need to clear out all personal items from the interior of your car prior to shipping with RoRo. Container Shipping is the second way to ship a vehicle internationally and is especially convenient for those who need to ship personal items or household goods with the vehicle. Your vehicle and any personal belongings you may need will be loaded into a container and then loaded onto the cargo ship for the voyage overseas to Marseille. Once the ship reaches Marseille Port, the container will be unloaded from the ship and you may either drive the vehicle to your location or can arrange for it to be transported for you. The total cost of shipping will vary depending on your shipping location from the United States and the distance from there to Marseille, the weight of your vehicle or the weight of the container load, and the fees that the automobile transport company charges. Your agent will detail all the cost associated with shipping and will give you a finalized quote before your vehicle is shipped.
