Shipping Methods.
There are two ways of getting your car imported in Kyoto. The first one includes a container which would provide shelter for your car. You can also ship additional goods within it. You can, however, share it with someone else in order to split the cost in two.
The other method is called Roll-on/Roll-off and it requires your car to be driven on its wheels on a shipping deck on a carrier ship. You have to empty the car and leave nothing but a spare tire, car jack and floor mats.
Import Procedures.
As we are conversant with the various procedures and requirements of shipping to Kyoto, all that is needed is adherence to the specific international regulations. If you need to ship your car in Kyoto for a period less than a year there are different rules that will apply as per Japan Customs. The most important one is the so called CPD which requires provision of ownership identification documents. The Japan Automobile Federation requires a lot of paperwork to be registered on your behalf in Kyoto.
A permanent import procedure would take place if you need to import your car for more than a year. You have to provide ownership documents as well as insurance policy, bill of lading and other documents related to the registration. You’d also have to clear custom duties at the arrival apart from the different local taxes. You also have to clear the emission test which is conducted by local authorities. If you need more information you can check the latest updates at the site of the Japan Automobile Federation.
