Temporary and permanent vehicle import.
You are allowed to import cars for personal use to the country, for 180 days without any special permit. This is possible only when the vehicle registration is in the name of the owner driving it. Also, only the owner and related family members are allowed to drive. You also need to have US company insurance and driver’s license. Those wishing to settle in Portugal permanently as a returning citizen or for work require vehicle registration once the 6 months are up.
For this, you need to get the residency permit first. The Portuguese authority requires inspection of car and compliance with the highway standards of the country. For inspection, you will need to take it to any authorized centre here. The standards will vary depending on the model and vehicle make. The rules vary for collectables and vintage cars. However, if a vehicle passes the European standards chances are it will do the same in the Portuguese scenario.
When applying for driver's license and residency permit in Portugal you have to surrender the original license from USA. Unless it involves import of brand-new car from outside Portugal, you have to pay the VAT. In case you decide to sell it within a year, taxes become due. Shipping of one vehicle is allowed every five years duty-free.
Laws pertaining to import of vehicles.
In this country, the vehicles carry Documento Uníco Automóvel or ‘all-in-one’ cards. This card works as vehicle registration, logbook and the license plates as well. You have to keep this card inside your vehicle whenever you drive. The law requires you to carry the card; the owners require Portuguese license plates as a part of the formalities. Every document that you fill in the country for import and registration is in the Portuguese language. In order to do this right customer care is in place, assisting you with the process. Navigating it in a foreign language is difficult especially when it comes to dealing with the internal bureaucracy. Thus, it is important to take help whenever required.
For importing vehicles, two transport methods are prevalent namely - Container Shipping and RORO method. In the first, the vehicle along with household personal goods will be inside 20 or 40 feet container. In the other, the car drives on and off the ship on own wheels.
