Important Bolivian Shipping Alert: As of the year 2008, Bolivia does not allow used cars to be imported into the country that are older than four years old, and it also bans trucks, buses, and some commercial vehicles older than six years into the country.

This decree was issued in December of 2008 and is still in effect – it was issued in response to the country being flooded with old, used vehicles from other countries, which had a serious environmental impact and depressed the Bolivian auto market. Even if your vehicle is less than four years old, you must obtain an import clearance form from the Bolivian Customs department.

Shipping Information

Since Bolivia has no coastline of its own, your vehicle cannot be shipped directly to Bolivia itself, but most likely to a destination port of Arica or Iquique, both ports in Chile, the western neighbor of Bolivia. The shipping company that you contract with will be aware of this and will make the appropriate arrangements.

You will, however, still have to arrange for your vehicle to be somehow transported to the port of departure in the United States, and that will depend on which region of the country you live in. If you live in the east, west, or south, there are many port cities available that your shipper might operate from. If you drive your vehicle to the port of departure, you can save some money on the total cost, otherwise, it must be picked up by your shipper and trucked to the port city.

Then you’ll need to decide whether your vehicle will be shipped using the container method, or via Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO). Shipping via container affords more protection for vehicles but is also more costly. If you share a container with another vehicle, that cost can be reduced somewhat, but it will still not be as inexpensive as RORO shipping.

The vehicle must be driven on and off the ship using its own power for RORO transportation, and it is not enclosed during transit; instead, it is merely tied to the deck. If you choose this shipping option, you can't keep anything in the car but the spare tire and jack. In addition, you can't have more than a quarter tank of gas in the car.

Required Documents For Shipping A Vehicle To Bolivia

  1. Purchase invoice
  2. Technical report
  3. Proof of insurance (policy)
  4. Certificate of origin
  5. Registration
  6. Description of vehicle

Other Requirements

You will have to be able to demonstrate positive ownership of the vehicle being shipped, usually by means of a bill of sale with your name on it. The title for the car must be clear of any liens unless the lienholder has provided written authorization for you to export this car from the country.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency will also need to see documented proof of registration and your driver license before they will allow the vehicle to be exported. You should contact this agency well ahead of any planned shipment, in case of any hold-ups that may need to be ironed out.

At the destination port, there will be an import duty imposed and the vehicle will have to clear Customs in whichever port it is shipped to. You can contact the Bolivian Embassy in the U.S. for questions about any restrictions on the Bolivian side of the shipment.

Shipping Of Heavy Equipment & Oversized Cargo To Bolivia

A1 Auto Transport is one of the leading auto transport companies in the U.S. Our access to the best transport technology and equipment has made it possible for us to ship inside and outside of the nation for decades. Shipping heavy equipment or oversized cargo to another country on your own will only prove to be stressful and expensive especially since you must comply with Bolivia’s import laws. Luckily, our trained specialists have the experience and knowledge necessary to make the process of transporting such equipment to another nation much easier.

The type of cargo you’re shipping will determine which transport methods are available to you as well as how much you’ll pay for your shipping services. Thus, the type of cargo you plan to ship to Bolivia is deemed as heavy equipment or oversized cargo if it is too large for a 40ft shipping container or heavier than the standard vehicle. A1’s Four Overseas Transport Methods

There are a total of four overseas transport methods offered to those in need of shipping heavy equipment or oversized cargo internationally. The shipping services available to you depend on the type of heavy equipment you’re shipping to Bolivia. In some cases, ground transport methods will also be needed to complete the delivery. Our shipping professionals will make sure your cargo’s transport is carried out successfully regardless of the services you choose. To give you further reassurance, you can track your cargo with real-time satellite service accessible through any WiFi enabled device.

Some of our transport options are less expensive than others. Although each of our shipping methods may not provide the same protection, every one of our customers is given partial insurance coverage. We do offer additional insurance for those who wish to protect the full value of their heavy equipment. Here are the four shipping methods we have to offer…

  1. Container Shipping
  2. Flat Rack Shipping
  3. RoRo Transport
  4. LoLo Transport

Container shipping offers the greatest protection yet it is the most expensive shipping option for overseas transports. Flat rack, RoRo and LoLo shipping are all open air services that are carried out in different ways. For flat rack shipping, the cargo is strapped to a metal rack before being placed on the boat. RoRo shipping is the least expensive method and requires that your heavy equipment or large vehicle is operable, while LoLo shipping is best for inoperable vehicles and crated equipment.
