Restrictions, documentation and eligibility.
You can send vehicles to Antigua, but must adhere to the specific regulations and laws. As per laws, only right hand driven vehicles are allowed to be imported and driven in All Saints, and in other cities. Additionally, you cannot import vehicles that are over 5 years old into the country as per the environmental laws. Some of the essential documents that have to be submitted to Antiguan Customs Department to be eligible for the custom clearances include:
- Import license (authorized by Ministry of Trade)
- Vehicle purchase invoice.
- Bill of Lading.
- Car title and registration documents.
- Environmental Levy Form.
- Insurance policy.
- Passport and driving license of owner.
In addition to submitting the different documents, you need to be aware of the taxes that have to be paid. These are applicable by Tariff Code and the Customs Procedure Code (CPC). There is VAT on all imported vehicles amounting to 15% of the total value of the vehicle. Depending upon the original price of the vehicle, there is a 60% custom duty while the stringent Environment tax amount to $6000.
Benefits of returning citizen.
For returning citizens, if you have been living abroad for over 10 years and are coming back to Antigua, you are categorized as returning citizen. You can import one vehicle that you have owned for a minimum of two years, completely duty-free. You don’t have to pay any of the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) on the vehicle that is owned for a minimum of a year. However, this is applicable on personal vehicles only. The Bill of Lading is required to complete the customs declaration form and only then will the vehicle be evaluated and valued. You will be required to get the Environmental Levy form for a waiver from the Minister of Agriculture. The waivers cost about $3500-$400 for vehicles used for 1 year or more and $1000 for vehicles below 1 year.
