Vehicle Inspection, Driving In Scotland, & Registration Resources
Driving In Scotland
There are a few key differences between driving in Scotland and driving in the U.S. For one, vehicles drive on the left side of the road as opposed to the right. As you might expect, steering wheels are on the opposite side of the vehicle as well. Roundabouts are also fairly common in Scotland so it’s good to be familiar with right of way rules.
Another difference is that diesel fuel is more widely used so you should be careful that you’re using the proper type of fuel, especially with an imported vehicle.
Ministry of Transport (Vehicle Inspection)
The roadworthiness test in the Scotland (and throughout the UK) is referred to as the “MOT” after the Ministry of Transport, which issues the test. The inspection covers basic parts of the vehicle which need to be in good working order for the safety and emissions standards. It includes the following components:
- Body
- Seat belts
- Exhaust system
- Brakes, tires, & wheels
- Headlights and turn indicators
- Windshield & wipers
- Suspension
- Steering wheel & column
