Port History
The Port of Camden – Gloucester City owes its growth to its immediate neighboring city, Philadelphia. The city of Philadelphia was founded in the 17th century when businesses started off along the western shores of the Delaware River. Growth was slow, but by the 19th century, the need for a port on the other side of Delaware River to facilitate efficient crossing of the river bore the idea from which the Port of Camden was built. The port was built on the safest direct route from the port of Philadelphia, which landed it just on the shoreline of the then dull Gloucester City.
How the port got into car shipping services
For more than a century from when the port was founded, it played second fiddle to the port of Philadelphia. Its main usage was facilitating travel between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This, however, began to change with time. Businesses started sprouting around Gloucester City by the 20th century. As the economy of Gloucester City grew, so did the services offered by the port of Camden. The port has seen major renovations over the years, with expansions of its docks, service bays, and shipping facilities. The expansion attracted heavy cargo shipping along and across the Delaware River, including shipping cars to or from Port of Camden – Gloucester City.
Port’s facilities
The renovations and expansion saw the Port of Camden – Gloucester City get the relevant port equipment including pedestal cranes, trailer modular, floating cranes, container barges, RORO equipment, mobile cranes, and flat racks. The equipment enabled the port to offer more than just ferrying services. It facilitated the shipping cars to or from Port of Camden – Gloucester City.
A-1 Auto Transport Inc. today offers its services to the entire state of New Jersey, together with ocean freight services through the Port of Camden – Gloucester City. The port today offers both containerized and Ro-Ro car shipping services. The pedestal and floating cranes facilitate containerized car shipping. Under this method of shipping, the cars are driven into intermodal containers from which the entire container is lifted onto the cargo ship by the cranes.
The Ro-Ro equipment facilitate the roll-on/ roll-off car shipment whereby the cars are simply driven onto the cargo ship, transported and driven off upon destination. Shipping cars through road from states on the eastern side of the Delaware River to states on the Western shore of the Delaware (and vice versa) by road proves more expensive compared to by cargo ships.
