The Port of Brownsville was opened in the year 1936 and is located just near the mouth of the Rio Grande river and the Lower Rio Grande Valley plain, from which it borders the Gulf of Mexico. It acts as the southern terminus of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Its coordinates place it about 8 miles to the north of the United States – Mexico border. The Port is connected to the Gulf of Mexico by a direct 17-mile-long Brownsville ship channel.

The Port of Brownsville happens to be the largest land-owning public port in the entire US, with approximately 40,000 acres. With about 35% of its surface developed through port facilities, it offers one of the biggest service bays of any port in the US. As a result, the port is able to handle several dozen cargo ships and several million tons of cargo on its dock.

The port is linked to the Gulf of Mexico by the Brownsville ship channel that offers deep waters, currently at a depth of 42 feet. The ship channel provides a turning bay of 36 feet in depth and 1,200 feet in width. These dimensions are large enough to handle mega-sized cargo ships close to the dock.
