You can find plenty of rankings, ratings, and reviews for haulers online, but can you trust them? For the most part, the answer is no. Even websites that are frequently trusted by consumers have been called into question for manipulating rankings. Two of the primary consumer watchdog groups for the industry, the Better Business Bureau, and Transport Reviews, are not as transparent and objective as they claim. Here’s some background information:

• Better Business Bureau - ABC did an article in 2010 that detailed how the Better Business Bureau awards company rankings for pay. In the article, a group of business owners got an “A rating” for a fictitious business by paying $425. A non-existent sushi restaurant was also awarded a top rating for the same price. The journalists working on the story witnessed the same “pay for play” tactics directly when the BBB representatives told two small business owners over the phone that they could pay to upgrade their ratings and delete negative reviews. One of the owners took the bureau up on the deal and paid $395, which eliminated a complaint and raised their “C” grade to an “A.”
• Transport Reviews - Hauling Reviews is another pay-to-play review site that doesn’t really reflect the objective, unbiased views of customers. Though they state that membership support does not affect the ratings, they charge a hefty price to join.
