Auto Transport Consumer Complaint Hotline & Website
One of the toughest things for customers that are hiring an auto shipper is to find accurate, objective information about a car shipping company. The best resource for that information is the FMCSA website, which is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation and oversees the industry. If you’re a regular reader of our blog, you’ve probably seen us recommend the SAFER system portal on the FMCSA website as a resource for quickly finding information about a car shipper.
In this blog post, we’ll take a look at how to access the national database of complaints against auto transport companies, how to file a complaint if you have an issue and what other information is available, either online or over the phone about car shipping companies. First, let’s take a look at the two most common types of complaints:
Safety Complaint - A safety complaint may be registered within a 60 day window from the time of service. The 60 day limit applies to safety issues, but does apply to service complaints. (See the section below for contact information about safety and service records.)
Service Complaint - Service complaints do not require any paperwork, or even many of the specifics of the issue, but any information that can be supplied will certainly help. By providing as much information and documentation as you can, the FMCSA is better able to address service issues. It also helps to have record of what occurred if you’re seeking any kind of compensation from the carrier due to damages or issues with the service contract.
Filing a complaint online can be done with the National Consumer Complaint Database link listed under the resources section at the bottom of the page.
